Oprah Winfrey’s "The Big Give"
|
At the 2007 Clay Court Tennis Tournament held at Westside Tennis Club, Dr. Jensen stitched up Steffi Graff’s lip after she was accidentally struck by Andre Agassi’s racket. Dr. Jensen is the official team physician for the Clay Court Tennis Tournament and for the Association of Tennis Professionals.
While suturing Ms. Graff, Dr. Jensen learned of a rare opportunity to give back to the Houston community from Andre Agassi. Dr. Jensen teamed up with Agassi and "Mattress Mac" McIngvale to help restore Simms Elementary School as part of Oprah Winfrey’s "The Big Give." Dr. Jensen and the Athletic Orthopedic Research Foundation made a $10,000.00 contribution to purchase athletic and recreational equipment to the school, including everything from footballs to hoola hoops. He also enlisted Academy Sports and Outdoors to join in the effort. The Academy store located at I-10 and Brogden agreed to give Dr. Jensen a discount on the equipment, enabling him to purchase even more items, and also agreed to donate all of their discontinued items to the school. Dr. Jensen particpiated in this worthwhile effort because he absolutely believes all children deserve an opportunity to enrich their lives through athletics, which not only keep kids healthy and active, but also teach instrumental qualities such as determination, team-building skills, and perseverance... skills that will carry them through life.
