Unleashing Your Body’s Healing Power

Discover how the Athletic Orthopedics & Knee Center’s regenerative medicine treatments can restore your health and revitalize your life, safely and effectively.

What Is Regenerative Medicine?

The terms “stem cell therapy” and “regenerative medicine” are often used interchangeably to describe medical treatment that involves the use of the body’s innate healing abilities and materials to heal damaged tissues and organs, replace damaged cells, and/or regenerate new, healthy cells.

The Stem Cell Therapy Process

Collection
In our office or surgery center, the doctor will harvest bone marrow aspirate from the iliac crest (pelvic/hip bone).

Processing
Next, if you’re using bone marrow aspirate from your iliac crest, your collected blood is spun in a centrifuge for about 15 minutes.

Re-Injection
Finally, the resulting preparation of concentrated stem cell blood is re-injected into the injured area. The cells go to work right away, lowering inflammation in the short-term and beginning the process of tissue repair over the longer term.

A Game-Changing Solution For A Variety Of Conditions

Stem cell therapy is one of the most exciting and promising medical developments in decades. It has been used in Europe for over 20 years. Research is still ongoing, but it has already been shown that regenerative medicine can effectively treat the following health issues

  • Chronic pain in joints, knees, hips, elbows, and back
  • Arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Patellar tendonitis
  • Damaged cartilage
  • Sprained or torn ligaments
  • Neuropathy
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Disc problems
  • Bone problems

Stem Cell Treatment From A Trained, Board-Certified Doctor

As with all medical treatments, it is very important to ensure your stem cell therapy provider is a licensed, experienced regenerative medicine practitioner. Unethical and unlicensed clinics may deal in non-FDA-approved or other unsafe stem cell techniques.

A former collegiate athlete, Jack E. Jensen, M.D., F.A.C.S.M., is AOKC’s resident stem cell therapy expert.

He has worked with the Houston Rockets, the Houston Astros, the Houston Texans, professional tennis, and Olympic athletes. He specializes in knee orthopedics and is the author of The One Stop Knee Shop. He is a leader in the development of stem cell therapies and is currently one of a few doctors nationwide selected for participation in a clinical study that is currently ongoing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Stem Cells Legal?

Stem cells are produced within a patient’s own body and therefore are perfectly legal to be used in the United States and elsewhere. However, the FDA has determined stem cells that are grown and/or stored for later use, rather than being quickly re-injected, qualify as drugs. Such therapies are not available in the U.S. at this time.

Do You Use Embryonic Stem Cells?

No. Our therapy makes use of adult stem cells from either bone marrow or placenta cord cells. It was once thought that adult stem cells could only create similar cell types, but new research indicates they can be more widely used in the body than previously thought.

Can Stem Cells Cure Degenerative Diseases?

Many researchers have documented extremely promising results from the use of stem cells and hope to one day use the techniques to address Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, sickle cell anemia, organ failure, and more. However, at this time, the scope of stem cell efficacy is limited to certain conditions, and there is great potential in orthopedics.
