Chronic Pain Management – Living with Pain

Chronic pain affects the daily lives of millions of Americans. It is defined as constant pain that last over several months. The pain varies in each person from minor pain to pain so severe it interferes with the person’s ability to function normally on a day-to-day basis.

Chronic pain can develop from an injury like back pain from an accident, have triggers that bring on the pain such as migraines or just happen without a medical explanation.

This type of pain can take a physical and emotional toll on an individual. The pain itself can leave the person exhausted, depressed, stressed and anxious. Even the people close to the individual can be affected. A caregiver can begin to feel angry or resentful that their loved one never gets well despite their efforts.

Chronic Pain Management Techniques

There are a number of techniques than an individual suffering from chronic pain can implement into their daily routine to increase the quality of their life. These activities may not fully take away all the discomfort but they are good steps to lessen the pain.

  • Mediation – This helps the body and mind to relax. It is way to escape the everyday noise and become centered.
  • No Smoking or Drinking – Relieving the body of these toxins can promote a more restful sleep and helps the body be healthier.
  • Support Group – Joining a chronic pain support group can help the individual learn from others with similar stories and feel less alone.
  • Stress Reduction – Stress can bring on depression and anxiety which can make the body more receptive to pain.
  • Exercise – Though it may be difficult, exercise does release natural endorphins in the body that help block pain.
  • Acupuncture – Though not for everyone, acupuncture has helped some individuals reduce or even eliminate their pain.
  • Hypnosis – Going under hypnosis has helped some individuals reduce their perception of pain.
